Farmyard Darlings Letter #3: Zen and the Art of Not Pulling Your Hair Out Over the Holidays
I really, truly, want to enjoy the holidays. In fact, I really, truly, want to enjoy every single day. Especially since it’s the “most wonderful time of the year!” (Or at least it’s supposed to be.) But right now, I’m just not feeling it…Because everyday I wake up, yank out my hair, grab a bucket of coffee, yell at my kids, check online sales, feed the dogs, feed food scraps to the chickens, pray for a generous angel investor, and grab more coffee. Doing this all – as I kick the kids out of the house to make the bus on time – can be quite a challenge.
As you can see, there’s absolutely no Zen in my morning ritual. So, here’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to try to eliminate some stress in my life. (Because stress is such a productivity buzz kill!) I’m going to try to keep my cool over the holidays starting, uh, tomorrow.
Here’s my game plan:
1. Create a less hectic morning ritual. I will load up on CALM instead of half-n-half when I enjoy my coffee. I’m not going to go as far as lighting candles, meditating or practicing breathing exercises. (I have to save something for my New Year’s Resolutions.)
2. Let go of the woulda-coulda-shoulda s---t. I know that I should have a festive house now. (I don’t). I know that I could cook more. (I don’t.) And only if I would have planned our holiday card months ago they would have been out by now. (I didn’t.) So, I’ve let all of that go. One box of decorations this year, will suffice. Not ten. The speed dial for Pizza Guys is okay to have in your iPhone Favorites and we just might skip the holiday card this year.
3. Breathe more and punch less. If I tell myself to breathe more, it will save me a lot of money in the long run. I won’t be breaking truck horns or throwing random objects at people.
So, that’s my game plane. How are you going to keep your cool over the holidays?
